Egypt reiterates its opposition to Israeli presence at Philadelphi Corridor

Egypt has reaffirmed its rejection of Israel’s continued presence at the Rafah Crossing in the Philadelphi Corridor, a high-level source has revealed.

Speaking to Cairo News TV channel yesterday, the source emphasised that Egypt is mediating between the conflicting parties in Gaza in a manner that aligns with its national security and which preserves the rights of the Palestinian people.

Earlier, in a phone conversation with his Bulgarian counterpart Rumen Radev, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi stressed the urgent need to end the ongoing humanitarian crisis faced by the Palestinian people in Gaza.

Al-Sisi also underscored the importance of the international community playing a decisive role in recognising the State of Palestine, as this would support the peace process in the region and the two-state solution. He warned that the ongoing escalation could further destabilise the region, potentially leading to a wider conflict with severe consequences for all the people in the area.

The Philadelphi Corridor, a 14-kilometre (8.69-mile) demilitarised buffer zone along the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt, remains one of the major sticking points in Israel-Hamas negotiations.
