Hamas yesterday commended the Republic of Namibia for its decision not to allow a ship carrying weapons destined for Israel from docking on its shores.

In a statement, Hamas said that this stance aligns with Namibia’s support for the Palestinian people and their just cause, as well as its call to end the genocide against the Gaza Strip.

Hamas described Namibia’s position as honourable and courageous, noting that it is consistent with the African Union’s support for the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights, and its opposition to the ongoing occupation and escalation of aggression against them.

The movement also called on all countries, governments and free people across the world to intensify all forms of boycott and isolation of the occupation, and to exert pressure through all available means to stop its aggression against Palestinian land, people and holy sites.

On Tuesday, Namibian Justice Minister Yvonne Dausab told state media that a ship was stopped because it had “explosive material destined for Israel”.

The MV Kathrin, which set off from Vietnam, had requested permission to dock in the port of Walvis Bay – before sailing north, on a suspected route towards the Mediterranean via the Strait of Gibraltar.
