The death toll from the recent floods in Yemen’s Dhamar province has risen to 30, the Houthi group said yesterday.
The Director of Wasab Al-Safel District in the Houthi-controlled Dhamar province, Fouad
Al-Qudaimi stated that rescue teams from the Civil Defence, Red Crescent, and local community members recovered the bodies yesterday. The search operation covered an area of approximately 6-8 kilometres in the valleys.
He added that the number of bodies recovered since the floods began has now reached 30, following the complete or partial destruction of more than 25 homes. Rescue teams are still searching for one missing person, he explained.
On Saturday, the Houthi group reported that 27 people had died due to the heavy rains and floods that hit Dhamar province on Thursday and Friday, with the number rising to 30 yesterday.
Since the beginning of August, increased rainfall across several Yemeni provinces has led to the death of nearly 180 people, with hundreds more injured due to floods and lightning strikes. Over a quarter of a million people have been affected, particularly in displacement camps.
After years of war, Yemen’s severely weakened infrastructure has exacerbated the damage and losses caused by floods and adverse weather conditions.
