Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani on Wednesday instructed the enhancement of combat readiness and performance improvement of army units. This comes after Iraqi forces made significant progress in a security operation in the Anbar desert region in the west of the country.
Al-Sudani chaired a meeting at the Ministry of Defence, attended by the minister of defence, army leaders, military branch heads and senior officials. The discussion focused on increasing the readiness of all army formations and commands, including ground forces, the air force, the navy and air defence units, to boost combat preparedness.
According to a statement from Al-Sudani’s media office, the prime minister emphasised the need to activate intelligence work and conduct preemptive operations against Daesh hideouts. He also called for coordination between intelligence agencies and security forces to monitor and crack down on drug trafficking gangs.
He highlighted the need to prioritise training, equipping and arming, particularly within the Air Force and Army aviation units.
The Joint Operations command of the Iraqi army confirmed on Tuesday that 16 Daesh militants had been killed, and three of their vehicles destroyed during the Anbar Desert operation.
