Six thousand Sudanese people were displaced in a week due to floods and heavy rains, bringing the total number of displaced people to more than 178,500 since June, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) announced yesterday.

According to the UN agency, 119 incidents of heavy rains, floods and torrents have been reported from between 1 June and 13 September, which caused the displacement of 178,460 people from 15 states in Sudan.

It added that from 5-13 September, floods have led to the displacement of about 5,940 people, and the complete and partial destruction of about 1,349 buildings, noting that “estimates indicate that 44 per cent of those displaced by floods and rains had already been displaced due to the conflict before the floods began.”

Last Wednesday, the Sudanese authorities announced that the death toll from floods and rains had risen to 212.

Sudan’s rainy season begins in June and continues until October. This year’s weather conditions coincide with the continued suffering due to an ongoing war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) military group; which has killed about 18,800 and displaced nearly ten million, according to the United Nations.

Millions now face famine as a result of the ongoing war.
