An Iran-backed Iraqi militia has claimed responsibility for drone and missile attacks against “vital targets” in Israel on Sunday, Anadolu has reported. The Islamic Resistance in Iraq said that it also used upgraded cruise missiles on targets in the north of Israel and drones in southern Israel.

“These attacks are in solidarity with our people in Palestine,” claimed the militia, “and a response to the massacres perpetrated by the [Israeli] occupation against civilians, including children, women and the elderly.”

Israel’s Army Radio confirmed that three drones launched from Iraq had been intercepted. No injuries or damage were reported.

According to Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, the interceptions occurred south of the Israeli-occupied Syrian Golan Heights.

Regional tensions have escalated amid Israel’s ongoing offensive against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, which has killed nearly 41,400 people, mostly women and children, following a cross-border incursion led by Hamas on 7 October last year.
