The Civil Defence Authority in the Gaza Strip has said that hundreds of displaced families across the enclave are asking for tents to protect them from the weather as winter approaches.

The authority called on humanitarian organisations and institutions to respond by sending in tents and portacabin shelters ahead of the cold, wet autumn and winter seasons.

On Sunday, dozens of tents housing displaced families were flooded when heavy rain hit Al-Mawasi area west of Khan Yunis in the Gaza Strip.

The main humanitarian organisation operating in Gaza, UNRWA, has already said that it is “facing great difficulties” in getting such supplies into the territory.

The agency explained yesterday that it is making “every possible effort” to provide “necessary winter supplies, including plastic sheets, tents, mattresses and blankets.” However, it added that an “immediate ceasefire” is needed to ensure the “safe and sustainable delivery of aid.”
