Emir of Qatar tells UN that the key to security in the Middle East is a ‘just peace’

The Emir of Qatar has told the UN General Assembly that Israel knows that its war on Lebanon will bring security and peace neither to northern Israel nor Lebanon, and that the “key to security rests on a just peace.” Emir Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani made his comment in his speech to the assembly yesterday.

“Apart from committing a major crime by exploding communication devices simultaneously harming thousands of people with total disregard for their identity or location, Israel is currently waging a war on Lebanon and no one knows to what extent this war could escalate,” said the Emir. “Is it reasonable that, even after this disaster, the major countries with the ability to influence the course of events are unable to reach a conclusion about the necessity to stop the war and pivot towards a just solution immediately instead of innovatively working on formulations to evade it?”

He continued by pointing out that, “What Israel is committing against the Palestinians is genocide, and we oppose the targeting of civilians from all sides. There is no Israeli partner for peace in the current government and no peace process taking place, but rather a genocide.”

The Qatari leader described the “blatant aggression” against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip today as “the most barbaric, heinous and extensive” in breaching human values, international laws and conventions. “There is no point in talking about security, peace and stability in the Middle East and around the world if not backed by concrete steps leading to an immediate ceasefire and an end to the Israeli occupation of all Arab territories.”

The State of Qatar, said Emir Tamim, has opted to undertake mediation efforts in an endeavour to stop the aggression on Gaza and secure the release of prisoners and detainees, but the failure to intervene to stop the aggression is a major scandal. “The international community bears responsibility for the consequences of what is happening to the Palestinian people who are subjected to an unfolding genocidal war.”

The end of the occupation, he insisted, is neither a favour nor a gift from anyone. “It is the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.”

The Emir then referred to the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in July, and reminded the General Assembly that he was not only the political leader of the movement, but also the first democratically-elected Palestinian prime minister. Haniyeh was killed in Tehran and is buried in Qatar.
