The Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement has called on UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to take immediate steps to put pressure on the Israeli occupation regime and its supporters to stop the genocide in the Gaza Strip and the blatant violations of international law in the West Bank and Jerusalem. Hamas made the call in a letter to Guterres on Saturday following his comments about the ongoing occupation and aggression not only posing a danger to the Palestinians but threatening international peace and security.
“We write to you as you open the 79th regular session of the United Nations General Assembly, and we confirm what you have previously stated that, ‘The war in Gaza is causing horrific human suffering, destroying people’s lives, tearing families apart, and leaving huge numbers of people homeless, hungry, and traumatised.’ The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip has gone beyond the level of a catastrophe due to the barbaric Zionist aggression,” said Hamas.
“We call on you to intensify relief efforts for our steadfast people in the Gaza Strip by opening the crossings and directing urgent aid in the form of food, medicine, clothing and shelter supplies, especially since the slogans raised at General Assembly are to leave no one behind, and to work together to advance peace, sustainable development and human dignity for current and future generations.”
The movement appealed to Guterres and the UN not to leave the Palestinian people behind. “Do what is necessary to ensure security and peace across Palestine and the region, and take the necessary measures to defend the rights of the Palestinian people in accordance with the principles and values of the UN Charter and previous UN resolutions.”
The movement noted that the General Assembly adopted a resolution on 18 September calling on the occupation state to end its illegal presence in the occupied Palestinian territories.
“This terrible war must end,” said Hamas, which pointed out that it has cooperated with mediators for a ceasefire and a prisoner exchange agreement. It also said that this was in stark contrast to the “inflexibility” of the occupation regime led by Benjamin Netanyahu and his “fascist” ministers.
In closing, the movement said that it holds the far-right Netanyahu regime and its supporters fully responsible for the failure of the ceasefire negotiations; affirms its previously announced position of not going to further rounds of negotiations; and refuses to discuss new proposals that would provide cover for the occupation’s aggression and give it more time to continue its genocide against the Palestinian people.
