UNIFIL: Israel informed us of plan to invade southern Lebanon by land

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said yesterday that the Israeli military had notified them of its intention to invade southern Lebanon by land.

In a written statement, the UN peacekeeping mission considered the Israeli invasion a “violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701”.

“We urge all parties to refrain from such escalatory actions that will only lead to more violence and more bloodshed,” it added, noting that its peacekeeping troops “are still in their positions”.

“We are regularly adjusting our posture and activities, and we have contingency plans ready to be activated in case of absolute necessity,” the statement said.

UNIFIL concluded its statement by reiterating “the safety and security of peacekeeping forces…. And reminded all parties of their obligations to respect that.”

On 23 September, the Israeli occupation army launched its biggest attack on Lebanon in almost 20 years. It targeted areas in the south of the country and in the capital Beirut and killed numerous Hezbollah commanders including the group’s Secretary General, Hassan Nasrallah.
