Azerbaijan has announced the successful return of eight of its citizens from Iraq and Syria over the past month, making it the latest country to work on the repatriation of its nationals from the conflict-ridden zones.
According to Azerbaijani news outlet, News.az, the country’s Foreign Ministry informed it of the successful repatriation of eight Azeri citizens, six of whom were returned from Syria on 18 September and two more of whom were returned from Iraq on 7 October.
With the Ministry assuring that the nationals’ identities, locations and citizenship statuses were carefully verified before their return, it emphasised the key role that Azerbaijan’s diplomatic missions in the region played in carrying through the repatriation.
A primary component reportedly consisted Azeri representatives having been deployed to Turkiye and Iraq to oversee the entire process, which included comprehensive medical and psychological evaluations for the returnees. The citizens were also given certificates confirming their return to Azerbaijan.
According to the Ministry, the next phase of the repatriation process will focus on the rehabilitation and social reintegration of the returned nationals, with Baku insisting that it is committed to supporting all citizens affected by armed conflicts abroad.
