United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said yesterday the Israeli war on the besieged Gaza Strip, which began a year ago, continues to devastate the lives of Palestinians and cause them severe human suffering.

In a video message marking the anniversary of the Israeli war in Gaza, the UN chief expressed solidarity with the war victims and their families.

The war “continues to shatter lives and inflict profound human suffering for Palestinians in Gaza, and now the people of Lebanon,” he said.

It is time, he added, for the release of all Israeli prisoners of war held in Gaza, “time to silence the guns. Time to stop the suffering that has engulfed the region. Time for peace, international law and justice.”

Israel has killed more than 41,900 Palestinians and wounded over 97,300 others since 7 October 2023. More than 10,000 people are still missing, presumed dead under the rubble.
