Former Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki has called on the Tunisian people, intellectuals including the opposition to restore the path of the revolution amid reports that incumbent President Kais Saied has won a second term.

On Sunday, a poll revealed that Saied has won the presidential elections by 89 per cent, outperforming his competitors, Ayachi Zamel and Zuhair Al-Maghrawi.

Both Zemal and Al-Maghrawi have rejected the results warning that they may have been falsified.

Commenting on the results, Marzouki said it was not difficult to predict the result. The blame, he added, should not be placed on the coup plotter or his supporters, referring to Saied, rather the blame should be placed on the millions of Tunisians who turned their backs on this humiliating charade of revolutionary Tunisia.

“The problem lies with those who insisted on participating in the charade from beginning to end and in all forms,” he added.

Marzouki blamed the country’s intellectuals, including opponents, for being afraid of the dictatorship and agreeing to play along, adding they have two options; either continuing in the same path, that is, playing within the limits set by the dictatorship or learning from their mistake and rising to the challenge instead of circumventing it.
