The Iraqi government has issued a statement condemning “any attack on our Supreme Religious Authority,” after an Israeli TV station included a picture of Iraq’s Shia Grand Ayatollah Ali Al-Sistani as part of an Israeli kill list.

“In the wake of the Zionist entity’s escalating genocidal war and blatant crimes against humanity in Gaza and Lebanon, its racist, inciting media has launched a vicious attack on the image of the Supreme Religious Authority,” Iraqi Government Spokesperson Basim Alawadi said in a press statement.

“The Iraqi government strongly condemns any attack on our Supreme Religious Authority, which is respected and revered by all Iraqis, the Arab and Islamic worlds, and the international community,” Alawadi added in his statement, which appeared on the official Facebook page of the Iraqi Prime Minister’s Media Office.

He described Israel as a “criminal” entity and warned against the “dangers” of its attack on Iraq’s Supreme Religious Authority, adding that “such provocations encourage the expansion of aggression and pose a real threat to international peace and security.”

The Iraqi official called on the UN Secretary-General and the international community “to reject and condemn any action that offends the feelings of Muslims worldwide and attempts to undermine globally respected figures.”
