Iran Air has cancelled its flights to European countries in response to the European Union’s sanctions against Iranian individuals and bodies, Anadolu Agency reported yesterday, citing Jafar Yazarloo, spokesperson for Iran’s Civil Aviation Organisation (CAO).
On Monday, the European Union sanctioned seven individuals and seven entities in Iran, including civil aviation companies, accusing Tehran of providing drones and missiles to Russia.
According to Iran’s state news agency IRNA, Yazarloo announced that Tehran’s flagship airline, Iran Air, cancelled its flights to Europe due to the imposed sanctions.
He added that the European Union imposed sanctions on Iran Air, Mahan Air and Saha Airlines, describing the move as a violation of international law.
Yazarloo explained that Iran Air had to cancel flights to European countries “because it will no longer be able to obtain landing permits.”
On Monday, the UK also imposed sanctions on Iranian individuals and institutions following Iran’s missile attack on Israel on 1 October, in retaliation for the assassination of Hamas’s political leader Ismail Haniyeh and Hezbollah’s Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah.
