The Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, yesterday stressed the importance of protecting hospitals following Israel’s targeting of a hospital and school complex sheltering displaced Palestinians in central Gaza.
In a post on X, Ghebreyesus commented on the Israeli bombing of Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Gaza, saying: “Horrifying reports from Al Aqsa hospital in #Gaza, where people sheltering were killed and injured, some of them suffering severe burns.”
“Hospitals should be places of healing and safety,” he added, stressing that “They should be protected.”

“We once again call for an end to the attacks. We call for peace,” Ghebreyesus continued.
In the early hours of Monday, five Palestinians were killed, and around 65 others were injured when Israeli strikes hit tents set up for displaced people in the courtyard of Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, resulting in a large fire that engulfed around 30 tents. Footage circulating online of the event showed Palestinians being burnt alive including 20-year-old Shaaban Al-Dalou who was confined to a hospital bed and connected to an IV drip in the hospital’s courtyard.
