At least 12 migrants have died off the coast of Libya in their bid to reach Europe, the latest tragedy in the nightmare of the Mediterranean’s migrant crisis, AP reports.
According to the report, the boat was carrying migrants from various countries and capsized in the early hours. It has been reported that some of those picked up by the Libyan coast guard said the boat was unseaworthy.
The Mediterranean continues to be one of the deadliest migration routes in the world, the report added.
Save The Children NGO shared via X that “12 people, many likely fleeing hardships, have died off Libya’s coast. Migration should not be a death sentence. Time to #ProtectMigrants and support safe, legal routes for those seeking safety.”
As instability in home countries increases, and where many believe migration is the only way to a better future, desperate migrants will continue to risk their lives.
The report says this latest tragedy will again bring to light the need for a more robust support systems for migrants, as well as improved coordinated international effort to ensure safe, humane migration routes.
