The International Organisation for Migration announced on Tuesday that the war in Sudan has displaced more than 14 million people, either within the country or outside its borders. It is, said the IOM, the worst displacement crisis in the world this year.

“Eleven million have been internally displaced within the country,” explained IOM Director-General Amy Pope, “with 3.1m having crossed borders. So that’s actually over 14 million people who are on the move right now.” She told journalists that 200,000 of the people have been displaced since September.

Pope confirmed that half of Sudan’s population currently needs humanitarian assistance, as they are unable to access shelter, clean drinking water or healthcare. More than half of the displaced are women, she pointed out, and more than a quarter are children under the age of five.
