The Greek authorities have opened a disciplinary investigation into the head of the Nea Filadelfeia Municipality Employees’ Union for hanging up a pro-Palestine banner at the union’s request. Local media reported on Monday that the authorities opened the investigation based on a complaint filed by a citizen on the basis that the banner was hung in a public space.
The local authorities summoned the union leader, whose identity has not been revealed. The union said on Monday that it rejects the investigation and removal of the banner. It pointed out that messages of support for the Palestinian people are displayed in public buildings around the world.
“This is a message of human solidarity, while the Palestinian people are suffering from war and hunger, and the call to remove this banner disputes the spirit of solidarity,” it added.
The Greek authorities opened a disciplinary investigation last month against a teacher at an elementary school in the town of Tavros near Athens after she and her students made a banner which read “Freedom for Palestine”.
