UNICEF has said that 2,500 Palestinian children in the Gaza Strip urgently require medical evacuation for treatment abroad, the Palestinian Information Centre has reported.
“The situation in northern Gaza is extremely difficult and tragic, and is worsening,” spokesperson Kazem Abu Khalaf pointed out today. He added that 30 per cent of children in Gaza suffer from acute malnutrition. Abu Khalaf also said that 95 per cent of schools housing displaced people in Gaza have been completely destroyed.
UNICEF reported on 26 October that the rate of medical evacuations for children from Gaza had dropped from 296 to 22 per month following the Israeli occupation of the Rafah border crossing on 7 May.
Earlier this month, the World Health Organisation confirmed that 14,000 injured individuals in Gaza require medical evacuation. The WHO stressed that the healthcare system in Gaza has “collapsed, and there is no longer any place for those needing specialised medical care.”
