Member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), Ramzi Rabah, confirmed the organisation’s rejection of the Egyptian proposal to form a support committee for Gaza.
In a brief statement to Al-Resalah Net, Rabah stated that an Executive Committee meeting had been held, during which members voted against forming the committee.
The Executive Committee was reconstituted following meetings convened by the Fatah movement in 2018 for the Central and National Councils, a process that prominent Palestinian factions, including Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), boycotted.
Hamas agreed to Egypt’s proposal and was awaiting Fatah’s response after the idea was presented to the Palestinian Authority president in Ramallah.
Abdullah Abdullah, a member of Fatah’s Advisory Council, had previously told Al-Resalah Net that his movement would review the proposal with the president and work to garner Arab support for it. However, the PLO’s Executive Committee later announced its rejection of the initiative.
According to reports published by Arab media outlets, the proposed committee would consist of 10 to 15 members and would oversee all sectors, including the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip.
