The Kuwaiti-Iraqi Joint Committee will today resume its sessions to discuss demarcating the maritime borders beyond Marker No.162.
Al-Qabas newspaper quoted a diplomatic source saying yesterday that during its meeting, the committee will continue the joint discussion on the technical and legal aspects of many files, most notably the demarcation of the maritime borders.
On 6 December, Kuwait’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Tareq Al-Bannai, confirmed his country’s commitment to the terms of the agreement regulating maritime navigation in Khor Abdullah and the Security Exchange Protocol, based on its commitment to restore bilateral relations with Iraq, which have declined.
Al-Bannai also called on Iraq to correct the legal status of the maritime navigation agreement and resume meetings of its technical and other teams to complete the demarcation of the maritime borders.
In addition to the maritime border file, the issue of prisoners, missing persons and lost Kuwaiti property, including national archives, remain some of the pending issues between Kuwait and Iraq, amid Kuwaiti demands for the need to expedite the resolution of this issue.
