The spokesperson for UNIFIL, Candice Ardell, said that the Israeli army has been informed that the safety of UN peacekeepers cannot be guaranteed in the vicinity of Taybeh, southern Lebanon, and that patrols are avoiding this area.

Ardell stressed that the safety of peacekeeping troops is “a top priority”, adding that UNIFIL personnel will not undertake any actions that might expose them to unnecessary risks.

The UNIFIL media official also reminded the Israeli occupation army of its obligations under UN Security Council Resolution 1701 to ensure the safety of peacekeepers and allow for their unrestricted movement throughout UNIFIL’s operational area in southern Lebanon.

Yesterday, the Lebanese army issued a statement accusing Israeli forces of repeatedly violating the ceasefire agreement and encroaching on Lebanese territory, including burning several homes.

The statement noted that as part of Israel’s ongoing violations of the ceasefire agreement and its attacks on Lebanon’s sovereignty and citizens, hostile forces entered the Qantara and Taybeh-Marjayoun areas on 28 December and set several homes on fire.
