Chilean forum calls for release of Gaza hospital director detained by Israel

Chile’s Permanent Foreign Policy Forum has called for the release of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, who was detained on Saturday along with dozens of others by the Israeli occupation army during a raid on the facility in northern Gaza, Quds Press reported yesterday.

The group strongly condemned Abu Safiya’s arbitrary arrest and called on the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs to “take a clear position and work towards his immediate release” as well as “ensuring his physical wellbeing.”

“We must adhere to agreements and treaties related to human rights, adhere to international humanitarian law, and the provisions of the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949, which stipulates the protection of civilians in international armed conflicts,” it added.

Israel has denied knowledge of Abu Safiyya’s whereabouts, in spite of announcing on X that “the director of the Kamal Adwan Hospital […] was also taken in for questioning”, claiming he “is suspected of being a Hamas terrorist operative”.
