The International Criminal Court (ICC) has called on Sudanese authorities to reveal the whereabouts of former President Omar Al-Bashir and his associates, Ahmed Haroun and Abdel Rahim Hussein, and to hand them over to the court.

Members of the UN Security Council expressed their support for the ICC’s request, highlighting that impunity has allowed violations and crimes in Sudan to persist.

A legal defence team member for the former president previously mentioned that 80-year-old Al-Bashir requires regular medical check-ups and might occasionally need to travel overseas for treatment due to his health.

Since 2009, the ICC has been demanding the extradition of Al-Bashir, whose regime was overthrown by popular protests in April 2019.

ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan recently announced that his office will seek arrest warrants against those accused of committing atrocities in Sudan’s West Darfur region.

Addressing the UN Security Council, Khan stated that “crimes are being committed in Darfur as we speak. And daily, unfortunately, we see crimes being used as a weapon of war for so many that the law is meant to protect from these types of excesses.”
