The Sudanese army yesterday announced that it has taken control of central Bahri, north of Khartoum, including the Mak Nimr Bridge connecting the capital to Bahri, for the first time in 21 months.

In a statement, the army said its forces were advancing on multiple fronts.

It added that this progress came “after defeating the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia and inflicting heavy losses on them, while continuing to pursue the fleeing remnants.”

The army released video footage showing its troops inside the city’s police headquarters, while activists on social media shared videos of army forces on Mak Nimr Bridge from the Bahri side.

In one video, a field commander, whose name and rank were not disclosed, said: “Central Bahri is now under the control of the Sudanese army and free of the rebellion [RSF].” He added: “We have secured the southern neighbourhoods of Bahri and the city centre.”

Only eastern Bahri now remains in the hands of the RSF.

There was no comment from the RSF regarding the recent losses. However, the group announced that military reinforcements had arrived in the East Nile area, east of Bahri.
