Egypt: 35 remanded in custody for 15 days after enforced disappearance

Egypt’s Supreme State Security Prosecution has ordered the detention of 35 individuals, including two women, who had been subjected to enforced disappearance for varying periods.

The decision was made on Wednesday. They were questioned and held overnight before being officially remanded in custody for 15 days pending investigations into multiple cases.

The prosecution has charged the detainees with offences including “spreading and publishing false news and information”, “joining a terrorist group and supporting its objectives while being aware of its aims”, “misusing social media”, “using the internet to promote crimes” and “financing and advocating violence”.

The list of detainees includes two Egyptian women: Marwa Sami Abu Zeid, a journalist and the wife of a detainee serving a life sentence, and Faiza Ahmed Ahmed. Among the others are: Musab Saber Nasr who has been forcibly disappeared for over four years, and Abdel Rahman Abada El-Gharbaly who disappeared for around 50 days.
