Jordan yesterday called for the necessary conditions to be prepared to ensure the voluntary return of Syrian refugees to their country.

This came during a meeting in Amman between Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, according to a statement by the Jordanian Foreign Ministry.

Safadi and Grandi discussed “the ongoing cooperation regarding the Syrian refugee issue and the impact of developments in Syria on it,” referring to the overthrow of Bashar Al-Assad’s regime.

Safadi stressed “the importance of creating the necessary conditions for the voluntary return of Syrian refugees,” considering that “the solution to the refugee issue lies in their safe and voluntary return to their country.”

Millions of Syrian refugees are currently residing in Arab and Western countries.

Jordan is among the countries that have received the largest number of Syrian refugees since a civil war erupted in the country in 2011. Some 1.3 million Syrians now reside in neighbouring Jordan, nearly half of whom are officially registered as refugees.
