Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf discussed the developments in the Palestinian issue with his Spanish counterpart Jose Manuel Albares on Friday and stressed the need to find a “just and permanent settlement” based on the two-state solution.
According to a statement by the Algerian Foreign Ministry, Attaf and Albares met on the sidelines of the second day of the G20 meetings in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The Algerian Foreign Ministry reported that the two ministers discussed: “The developments witnessed by the Palestinian issue and stressed the need to continue international efforts aimed at finding a just and permanent settlement to the conflict in the Middle East based on the two-state solution.”
They addressed ways to advance relations between the two countries by: “Strengthening mutual trust and developing cooperation.”
Albares renewed his thanks to the Algerian authorities for their “effective” contribution to the release of Spanish citizen Navarro Canada Joaquim last January after he was kidnapped by an armed gang that abducted him and took him to northern Mali.
According to the same source, the Spanish minister confirmed Madrid’s support for Algeria’s role in: “Strengthening stability and promoting development in the Sahel-Sahara region.”
This is the first meeting since 2022 when the two countries experienced a severe political crisis, after which the two countries severed economic and commercial ties after the Madrid government adopted the Moroccan proposal to resolve the conflict in the Sahara region.
