Israeli police attacked the funeral procession of a recently released Palestinian detainee on Sunday evening. Nael Obeid, 45, died in an accidental fall on Saturday in Occupied Jerusalem, the Palestinian Information Centre has reported.

According to Palestinian media sources, Obeid was released in the sixth exchange of prisoners between Hamas and the Israeli occupation regime, which took place on Saturday, 15 February.

He had spent 21 years in Israeli jails when he was released. He died when he fell from the roof of his three-storey house in the occupied East Jerusalem district of Issawiya.

Dozens of Palestinians joined his funeral procession when Israeli police officers attacked them with a barrage of tear gas canisters. Many of those present and in adjoining homes suffered from their exposure to the gas. The police violence reportedly provoked fights with local residents.

The occupation police also attacked and detained on Saturday some young Palestinian men who gathered outside Hadassah Hospital in the holy city after Obeid was pronounced dead.
