Israeli Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi yesterday reaffirmed that he takes responsibility for the army’s failures on 7 October 2023, Anadolu reported.
This came in his response to the findings of the military investigation on the events of the day, which were released yesterday. The probe concluded that there were serious failures in anticipating and responding to the attack, including underestimating Hamas’s capabilities, leading to Palestinian resistance fighters taking control of the Gaza Division of the occupation army for several hours.
The private Hebrew-language newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth quoted Halevi as telling military commanders: “I acknowledge the failure and shortcomings during the events of 7 October, as I was the military commander at the time of this attack.”
He added: “Some individuals bear greater responsibility than others, but I believe that every officer and soldier in the army should feel as if they were the commander on 7 October and consider how they can correct mistakes in the coming years.”
