Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who also serves as the supreme commander of the armed forces and minister of national defence, chaired a meeting of the Supreme Security Council yesterday, DPA reported.

Photos published by the Algerian presidency on its Facebook page showed that the meeting was attended by the Army Chief of Staff, as well as the interior and foreign affairs ministers. Also present were the internal and external intelligence directors and several senior military and security officials. No further details were provided.

The meeting comes amid an unprecedented escalation in tensions between Algeria and France.

In a statement issued yesterday, the Algerian Foreign Ministry reaffirmed that it will strictly and immediately enforce the principle of reciprocity concerning all restrictions imposed on movement between Algeria and France. The ministry also stressed that it “categorically rejects any form of ultimatums, warnings, or threats.”

Algeria, the statement added, remains committed to its international standing and to upholding the unified legal framework governing the movement of individuals between Algeria and France without selectivity or distortion of its jointly established objectives.

It concluded by stating that in doing so, the hateful and spiteful French far-right has succeeded in its attempt to take Algerian-French relations hostage, exploiting them for vile political purposes that do not befit their status or significance.
