A medical team at Egypt’s Mansoura University’s Internal Medicine Specialised Hospital succeeded in extracting a mobile phone from a prisoner’s stomach using an endoscope, without surgical intervention, six years after he swallowed the phone.
The phone had settled in the prisoner’s stomach and severe complications appeared, along with gradual weight loss.
The patient, a prisoner serving a life sentence in Gamasa Prison, arrived at the hospital, and after conducting examinations and x-rays, he was found to have the phone in his stomach. This had caused him to suffer severe inflammation, ulcers and serious complications, in addition to losing more than 30 kilogrammes in weight, making him severely emaciated.
The case was quickly diagnosed, and the medical team decided to intervene with an endoscope.
The team managed to extract the phone in just 45 minutes without the need for surgery, finding it in a plastic bag.
