Electricity returns to parts of Gaza amid ceasefire

Limited electricity has returned to parts of Khan Younis in southern Gaza for the first time since October 2023 after a private distributor powered parts of the city centre yesterday. This follows fuel deliveries which entered the besieged Strip as part of the ceasefire agreement signed in January. The joy over the partial restoration of power is short-lived, however, as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced earlier this week that further deliveries of fuel or any supplies or aid to Gaza would be blocked once more. Since October 2023, Palestinians in Gaza have had to rely mostly on solar power to generate electricity for every-day use such as charging their phones or lighting lamps.
