The United Nations Security Council yesterday expressed its concern over attempts to establish a “parallel government” in Sudan.

In a statement, the council warned that such attempts could escalate the ongoing conflict in the country.

It called for a “permanent ceasefire” in Sudan and reaffirmed its commitment to the country’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.

The UN body urged all parties to the conflict to comply with international law and stressed that all member states must avoid “external interventions aimed at fuelling the conflict and instability.”

On 20 February, Sudan recalled its ambassador to Nairobi, Kamal Jabara, in protest against Kenya hosting meetings involving political forces and leaders from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to discuss forming a “parallel government”.

Kenya has defended its role, stating that the meetings were part of its efforts to find solutions to end the war in Sudan in coordination with the United Nations and the African Union.

The Sudanese army and the RSF have been engaged in conflict since April 2023, resulting in more than 20,000 deaths and nearly 15 million displaced persons and refugees, according to the United Nations and local authorities. Research by American universities estimate the real death toll to be around 130,000.
