Turkiye’s vice president has said that the remnants of the Assad regime in Syria will not be able to hinder the country’s transformation towards an inclusive political structure. “Nor,” added Cevdet Yilmaz, “will any other formation acting outside the law.”

The events taking place in Syria in recent days have saddened everyone, he added. “Those who are trying to provoke conflict and disrupt the stability of the Syrian people, based on ethnic and sectarian identities, will not be successful.”

The Turkish official pointed out that efforts to carry out sectarian provocations in Turkiye through Syria “are also doomed to fail in the face of our nation’s wisdom and the power of our state.”

Yilmaz mentioned that achieving stability and prosperity for Syria amid an atmosphere of unity is not just Turkiye’s wish, but also a requirement for Turkish national security. He noted that the stronger the Syrian government and its institutions become, the more stable the country will be.

“If there are those outside looking for someone to blame for the events taking place in Syria, it would be enough for them to look at who wants an unstable and weak Syria,” he wrote.

The coastal provinces of Latakia and Tartus have witnessed coordinated attacks by remnants of the Assad regime, the most violent since the previous president’s ouster. The attacks have been launched against security patrols, checkpoints and hospitals, which resulted in deaths and injuries.
