Israel has killed 150 Palestinians in Gaza, at a rate of about six every two days, since the ceasefire came into effect on 19 January, Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor said today, adding that the occupation authorities are also using starvation to slowly kill Palestinians in the enclave.
Euro-Med Monitor said its field team had documented the continued targeting of Palestinians by Israeli occupation forces, whether by sniper fire, quadcopter aircraft, or drone attacks. Palestinian citizens were being hit, it explained, “especially while they were trying to inspect their homes near the buffer zone it imposed along the northern and eastern borders of the Gaza Strip.”
Rafah was the most exposed to being targeted, the rights group said. Israel has killed 150 Palestinians, at a rate of about three per day, and injured 605 others, at a rate of 11.8 per day, Euro-Med said, “which confirms its continued targeting of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip systematically and without any military justification, despite the cessation of hostilities.”
In addition to this, Israel is “escalating its genocidal policies by imposing more deadly living conditions that lead to gradual and slow killing, through a comprehensive illegal blockade that strangles the Strip by preventing the entry of humanitarian aid and basic materials, and prevents the repair of infrastructure and services necessary for the survival of the population.”
It warned that famine could set in among Gaza’s population in addition to malnourishment in younger generations which would lead to “irreversible health damage and cause permanent physical and mental disabilities.”
This, Euro-Med explained, is part of Israel’s “systematic policy to destroy entire Palestinian generations”, which is a contravention of the genocide convention.
Highlighting the US plan to create a “Riviera of the Middle East” in Gaza, Euro-Med said Israel’s actions “are not merely negotiating pressure tools or isolated practices, but rather part of a deliberate plan in line with the US trend to impose forced displacement and empty the Strip of its population, within the framework of an ethnic cleansing policy that constitutes an additional indicator of the destructive intent of the crime of genocide.”
It called on the international community to take urgent action to stop Israel’s genocidal actions and to impose sanctions on the occupation state to isolate it.
