Saudi Arabia condemned the Israeli bombing of Syria and what it described as attempts to undermine the country’s security and stability, as well as that of the wider region, through “violations that contravene international agreements and laws,” according to an official Saudi statement released on Tuesday.
The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its “condemnation and denunciation of the Israeli occupation forces’ bombing of the territories of the brotherly Syrian Arab Republic,” calling it a “blatant violation of international law.”
The statement also denounced “Israeli attempts to destabilise Syria and the region through these repeated violations, which contradict relevant international agreements and laws.”
The ministry stressed “the need for the international community to take a firm stance against these aggressions.” it underlined “the importance of Security Council member states assuming their responsibilities by taking serious and decisive action to stop Israel’s ongoing attacks in Syria and prevent the conflict from escalating further.”
Saudi Arabia also called for “the activation of international accountability mechanisms for these violations,” while reaffirming its solidarity with the Syrian government and people.
On Monday, Israeli warplanes launched airstrikes on multiple locations in Syria’s southern province of Daraa, killing three civilians and injuring 19 others, including a woman and four children, according to the Syrian Civil Defence.
Since 1967, Israel has occupied most of the Syrian Golan Heights and took advantage of the situation in Syria following the fall of the Assad regime by seizing the Syrian buffer zone and declaring the collapse of the 1974 disengagement agreement with Syria.
Israel has also carried out hundreds of airstrikes in Syria, targeting military sites, vehicles, and ammunition belonging to the Syrian army.
On 8 December 2024, Syrian factions took control of Damascus following gains in other cities, bringing an end to 61 years of Ba’ath Party rule and 53 years of the Assad family’s grip on power.
