The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) yesterday announced that it has suspended nearly all medical aid to refugees in Egypt due to severe funding cuts.
A spokesperson for the Geneva-based agency said that around 20,000 patients would be affected by this decision. Treatment for diseases such as cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure and heart conditions will be impacted.
The spokesperson explained that “from now on, the UN agency can only fund emergency care in life-threatening situations.” The spokesperson also noted that “many of those affected are Sudanese refugees.”
Egypt is home to over 900,000 registered refugees.
Much of the funding for the African Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and regional governments has been lost due to the decision by US President Donald Trump’s administration to end most foreign aid contracts and cut $60 billion from the total amount of US foreign assistance.
