Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani held talks on Wednesday to discuss efforts to resume and implement the Gaza ceasefire deal.

According to a statement from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, the talks took place by telephone and “continued the tireless and sincere Egyptian-Qatari efforts to establish the ceasefire, return to the 19 January agreement, and ensure the implementation of its three phases.”

This, said the ministry, will ensure the release of captives and prisoners, and the entry of humanitarian and medical aid, as well as shelters into the Gaza Strip. “This will also include continuing joint efforts to coordinate with the US regarding mediation efforts,” it added.

Abdelatty and Al Thani agreed on the importance of continued joint coordination between Egypt and Qatar to work toward de-escalation in the region and prevent the slide into further tensions.

They also agreed on “the need for joint action between [Israel and the Palestinians] to reach a political settlement that ensures stability in the region, through the establishment of a Palestinian state as a permanent solution to the conflict.”
