Turkiye is evaluating the possibility of establishing a training base in Syria aimed at supporting the Syrian army in the fight against terrorism and enhancing stability in the country.
Sources in the Turkish Ministry of Defence said the request to set up the training base came from the new Syrian government.
According to the sources, during a ministerial-level meeting hosted by Jordan on 9 March 2025, with the participation of Turkiye, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon, attendees agreed to establish a joint operations centre in Syria and to support the country in its fight against terrorism, particularly the terrorist organization Daesh.
The sources said the establishment of a joint operations centre came in response to requests from the new Syrian government, noting that “agreement on this step has been reached, and related work is currently ongoing.”
The Turkish Ministry of Defence emphasised that “preserving Syria’s territorial integrity, enabling the new government to extend state authority throughout the country, and achieving stability and security in Syria are top priorities for Turkiye.”
