Algeria severs diplomatic ties with UAE, gives ambassador 48 hours to comply

Algeria has today, Thursday, decided to sever diplomatic relations with the UAE and gave the UAE ambassador 48 hours to comply with the decision, Anadolu reports.

In a statement reported by the official news agency, the Algerian Foreign Ministry said that the UAE ambassador (who was not named) was received at the ministry headquarters earlier on Thursday. He was officially informed of the decision to sever diplomatic relations and given a 48-hour deadline “to comply with this decision.”

The ministry explained that the decision was made “after exhausting all avenues to preserve bilateral relations.”

The Foreign Ministry accused the UAE of engaging in what it described as “provocative or hostile actions,” stating that Algeria had “exercised a great deal of restraint and a high sense of responsibility.”

It added that—guided by a spirit of full respect for the principles governing relations between states—it had “spared no effort to draw the UAE side’s attention to, and warn it of, the dire consequences that could result from its regrettable and unjustified behaviour.”

The statement continued: “Despite these numerous warnings, the United Arab Emirates persisted in these actions (which were not specified), reaching a point where they could no longer be considered acceptable or tolerable within the framework of relations between two sovereign states, nor could they remain without a response.” It stated that “after exhausting all avenues to preserve bilateral relations, the Algerian government decided today to sever diplomatic ties with the United Arab Emirates.”There was no immediate comment from the UAE regarding the decision and the Algerian accusations.

Relations between the two countries have been strained in recent months; last February, Algerian authorities announced they had initiated the necessary procedures to cancel the air services agreement with the UAE.
